www.festival.monstertheatre.com
Application deadline: Wednesday, October 15th, 5pm
Email to: hbmcollective@gmail.com
Here Be Monsters is dedicated to inspire and facilitate performing artists in the creation of new theatrical work. Here Be Monsters challenges teams to create original short performances under extreme time constraints. These performances premiere on the stage in front of a live audience at Performance Works on Granville Island October 30 and 31, 2009.
The festival starts with a creative workshop on Wednesday October 28 led by Here Be Monsters Artistic Producer Jeff Gladstone. Workshop fee is included in application fee for all HBM2009 participants.
48 hours before performance time, groups will receive their inspiration packages. These packages could involve anything from lines of poetry, a lighting special, a piece of choreography… Now, this is where you come in. Each group is responsible for supplying one prop, cleverly disguised, that will be randomly selected by another group and integrated into their performance in whichever way they see fit.
Once you have received your inspiration package you have 48 hours to write, rehearse and perform your play. Let the games begin!

This is CANCER runs in Vancouver March 17th - 21st
This is CANCER?
THIS IS GREAT THEATRE
"Let’s face it, the idea of spending time in a small, dark room with cancer doesn’t sound super appealing—particularly for folks who may have already done so in their lives. But if you’re humming and hawing about whether or not to go see This Is Cancer? I’m here to tell you something: just go... I had no idea watching a grown man singing and dancing in a shiny yellow unitard could be such a touching, emotional and life-affirming experience."

-Monday Magazine
"Horak triumphs by dint of coal-black humour and superior performance skills...
One can't help but be moved...
Scared of cancer? Check it out. Not scared of cancer? Check it out anyway."

This was the most outstanding, wonderful, and healing performance I have ever been to. I laughed and I cried...everyone should see this powerful and moving piece of theatre!

It's an odd show to 'review' because I so desperately hope it's not ruined for everyone reading this because I enjoyed the surprise so much. Excellent performances and FRESH writing. Everyone has somehow, through someone, been touched Cancer- (myself included- and not just on the knee in the dark...) I'll definitely be back!

Having lost our son to cancer four years ago, my husband and I were taken aback and initially very uncomfortable when the show began. We very soon were pulled in by this character which Bruce created. We laughed and cried. I have never experienced anything quite like it. Great performance!

In this one-man, satirical cabaret, writer/performer Bruce Horak brings Cancer to life.
CANCER, a deluded egotistical ASS, goes on his own journey of denial, anger, bargaining and acceptance when he discovers that the whole world hates him. Clown, Improv, Stand-up, Confessional, Solo Performance accompanied by a 3-piece rock band!
A cancer survivor himself, and one of Canada’s only legally blind professional actors, Bruce brings a fresh and funny perspective to the disease that too many of us will face and that so many of us could use a good laugh at.
