Atomic Vaudeville

Come witness the premiere of AV's award-winning cabaret in Vancouver November 10th -11th 2007

“Victoria’s Secret is out: Vaudeville has the capital's hottest pack of young actors” -Vancouver Sun

“Can it be that Atomic Vaudeville is poised to become the next big buzz in Canadian theatre?”
–Victoria Times-Colonist

“Marinates in a real and bitter flavour… More please.” –The Globe and Mail

Atomic Vaudeville after 3 years, is bringing its hit cult cabaret to Vancouver as part of Here Be Monsters company’s The Carnival of the Arts.

Atomic Vaudeville, a Victoria company led by director Britt Small and playwright Jacob Richmond has produced over 30 cabaret episodes winning them the Monday Magazine Award for best comedy act three years running. They have worked with more than 150 local and visiting artists and plan to increase that number when they come to Vancouver as they will be inviting a handful of Vancouver actors to be a part of the show. Atomic Vaudeville may be known to Vancouver audiences through their productions of The Qualities of Zero which played Vancouver in the fall of 2006 and Legoland which won the Georgia Straight Critic’s Choice award at the 2006 Vancouver Fringe Festival. Legoland will also be presented at this year’s TREMORS festival.

The company is composed of a collective of writers, performers and musicians supported by Richmond and Small. The company's mission is to redefine performance in their community by creating a living theatre environment combining a variety of performance disciplines as well as stimulating dialogue with the audience.

It is Vaudeville re-conceived for the present age, embracing the concerns and sensibilities of an undefined generation; attempting to reach out to an audience that is ready for a live, entertaining and relevant theatrical art form.

THIS IS CANCER!: LIVE!

THIS IS CANCER: LIVE!

Bruce Horak’s One-Man show, This Is CANCER: LIVE! Bruce Horak brings Cancer (the disease) to life and challenges the audience to view this disease, and their own lives, in a whole new light.

“An awesome blend of the sublime and the ridiculous. How could I be laughing at Cancer… I mean…it’s Cancer!!!” – Mary Fenkes, 3-time Cancer Survivor.

This one-man musical cabaret was nominated for a Betty Mitchell Award for ‘Outstanding Production of a Musical or Comedy’, and is the winner of the Betty Mitchell Award for ‘Outstanding Actor in a Musical or Comedy’ (2007). It has been invited to present as part of Theatre Hectics’ season in late Regina in late 2007, as well as at the Pivot Festival in Whitehorse in 2008. It garnered critical acclaim during Toronto’s SummerWorks Festival during the premier run in 2006 (***** - Now Magazine), and excerpts were presented as part of Toronto’s Harbourfront Centres’ Spiegelshow, summer 2007.

A cancer survivor himself, and one of Canada’s only legally blind professional actors, Bruce offers a unique and fresh perspective on the disease which took his sight, and most recently, his father. Directed by award-winning director/performer Rebecca Northan (Canadian Comedy Award – Best Sketch Group, Gemini and Dora Award nominee, CTV’s Alice, I Think) This is CANCER: LIVE! will challenge audiences to truly LIVE!

Bruce Horak is an accomplished playwright, actor, musician, director, teacher, facilitator and performer who has been a staple of Independent Theatre across Canada for over 12 years. His award-winning work has been presented at mainstream theatres and at Fringe Theatre Festivals from Montreal to Vancouver since 2001 (winning a Just For Laughs’ Frankie Award for Best Comedy in 2002, Audience and Critics’ Choice Awards in Toronto, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Edmonton and Vancouver, as well as numerous others). He has worked in virtually every theatrical medium, from Shakespeare to modern dance, and from Theatre for Young Audiences to Stand-up comedy.

Most recently, Bruce has been instrumental in the development of “Therapeutic Clown for Adults” – a beguiling blend of Lecoq-style Bouffon and contemporary forum theatre, of which CANCER is the culmination.

This is CANCER: LIVE! has been in process for over two years. Beginning with Mike Kennard’s (Mump and Smoot) cataclysmic Clown show, The Hollow produced at CanStage’s Berkley Street Theatre in March of 1995. Bruce began developing the character that would eventually morph into “cancer” during the intensive rehearsal process. The initial work was inspired by Kennard’s approach to Bouffon, and later incorporated Horak’s own interest in Improvisation, Comedy, Clown and Therapeutic Clown. The piece was fully realized through the initial production in Toronto, and with the generous support of Alberta Theatre Projects’ PlayRites Festival in 2007.

Here Be Monsters Collective: Company History

October 2007
Show-Off: Theatre Under the Gun Exploded!
Performance Works, Granville Island

14 independent companies participated in our annual original creation event. Receiving only 48 hours, and a few tools to help inspire creation; companies created, rehearsed, designed, and performed original short plays. The outcome was 14 new masterpieces, cooked up by these companies, under an exciting, pressurized time period. Two unconventional, innovative evenings of performance, that makes for an always ground-breaking event.

September 2007
The Vancouver International Fringe Club
1494 Old Bridge St, Granville Island

The Vancouver International Fringe Festival contracted Here Be Monsters’ Heather Lindsay to design, program and manage the Fringe Club. After many years of the Vancouver Fringe Festival not having a specific ‘meeting place’ for artists, patrons and community to gather at before or after a show; this year an old woodshop was transformed in to, what was called over and over again, ‘The best Fringe Club in North America EVER!’ In true Here Be Monster style, over 100 artists performed on the cabaret stage to celebrate theatre and art in Vancouver. Everyday the Fringe Club was rocking, keeping artists, friends and audience on Granville Island feeling together as a community for the two week duration of the festival.

June/July 2007
Show-Off at the Sweatshop Festival
Victoria Arts Centre, Victoria BC

Victoria’s Atomic Vaudeville invited HBM Collective to produce and run their successful Vancouver Show-Off: Theatre Under the Gun event in the island city’s summer Sweatshop Festival. Featuring local Victoria performance groups (ITSAZOO, Horse of Air Dance Company, WAVE Theatre, The 30 Cent Players, SNAFU dance, Intrepid Theatre and others), these companies presented original theatre, dance and comedy performances from the result of only 24 hours of creation.

February – May, 2007
The Improvised Soap Opera
The Beaumont Studios, 5th Ave & Alberta

Every Monday at the Beaumont Studios, audiences came to witness a completely improvised Soap Opera. Directed by Jeff Gladstone and Veena Sood and garnering great reviews and a rapidly growing audience, this was the first time Vancouver has taken on this popular project, originating from Toronto improvisers.

March 14 – 31, 2007
TREMORS: Rumble’s Festival of Emerging Arts
Performance Works, 1218 Cartwright St. on Granville Island

The Here Be Monsters Collective, Rumble Productions premiere Producers in Residence, presented the following events at Tremors:
The Tremors Monster Bar and "Salon Des Refusés" Gallery: Featuring some of Vancouver's most respected (and rejected) low-brow artists! Creating an environment for artists and audiences to stay and socialize, talk about shows, the art and what is happening in the world.
Foreshocks and Aftershocks: A theatre company, a line of text, an image, a sound byte, and a limited time to create a short show. You may have heard of this recipe before, but you’ve never seen it like this! Inspired by Show Off: Theatre Under the Gun and HIVE, 3 hot emerging companies will be given six days to create a performance that will take place in and around Performance Works— anywhere except the stage, because why make it easy?! Audience arrived early, grabbed a drink at the Monster bar and witnessed the mayhem!
St. Patty’s Day Psychobilly Hoedown: Artists and audiences celebrated St.Patty's day and joined us for a wicked night of live music with the Cryptomaniacs, the notorious Psychobilly band from Calgary!
New Play Café: In celebrating World Theatre Day, HBM created a free event that brought people out to hear and talk about new plays that are being developed in our city.

November 4, 2006
MONSTER PROM
The Anza Club

Here Be Monsters Collective introduced themselves to the “world” at the ANZA CLUB with their Web, Season, and Company launch party. This sold-out audience was witness to over 150 artists in one evenings span. These artists helped celebrate what Here Be Monsters is passionate about: all aspects of art…and lots of it at all times!!

March 8 – 18, 2006
HERE BE MONSTERS: A Carnival of the Arts
Performance Works

In March 2006, HBM produced "the highly successful premiere event”, HERE BE MONSTERS: A Carnival of the Arts, at Performance Works on Granville Island. Involving over 200 artists in its two-week span, the carnival proved to be an incredibly inspirational and successful arts event. It left people wanting more. As a result of our inaugural carnival HBM was asked by Craig Hall of Rumble Productions to be their Producers in Residence.
HBM Collective was thrilled and honoured to be working with one of Canada’s most respected companies.

HERE BE MONSTERS: A Carnival of the Arts! exploded onto the scene with performances including SHOWOFF: Theatre Under the Gun Reloaded (the resurrection of the 7 year tradition of plays created in 48 hours), Theatre Melee’s LAZY SUSAN (the remount of the Fringe Hit garnered three Jessie Richardson Award Nominations including Best Production, Small Theatre), Keith Johnstone (improv guru), world-renowned self-taught low-brow artist Andrea Tucker, and Performance Theatre Renegade Michael Green’s The Whaler.

carnival of the arts II - november 7-11 2007

BREAKDANCE ROBOT!!!!

Hey, monster brothers and sisters!

We had a productive meeting the other day about our upcoming Carnival of the Arts II and we are really excited. Jeff, Ryan, Heather, Jen, Michelle and Fitz are all really thrilled at this year's line-up.

Mark off November 7 to 11, 2007 for the fest.

Starting with, THE CARNIVAL SMORGASBORD on opening night November 7th featuring snippets of some of the festival shows like Atomic Vaudeville, Bruce Horak's, This is Cancer! : Live!.......and perhaps some surprises too!

We will kick our Carnival of The Arts II off with a bang....or should I say, a SMORG!

Basically, our festival is going to be awesome and you should come - if you are on FACEBOOK - check us out here.

This exciting news of the day is that this year our carnival is at the silky hip Dollhouse Studios - a venue also known as the home base for Sweet Soul Burlesque - we are happy to have met them and hope to see some of you sassing it up in honour of our new venue! It has a boudoir AND velvety curtains....it is really close to the Anza Club.

Monster Jen Fitzpatrick and artist extra-ordinare, Andrea Tucker did a photoshoot today with her dog Chi Chi for our upcoming promotional material for the festival.

Chi Chi and Andrea have both contributed greatly to many of our events.

"Dance it out people.....let's get these rainy blues out of our systems and just dance it out".
Monster Heather Lindsay

More info to come.
